It’s a terrible thought, but the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has probably killed public video game arcades once and for all. Polycade wants you to know that you don’t have to risk your health just to play your favorite arcade video games. Instead, let them bring the arcade to you with the Polycade modern arcade platform.
Los Angeles-based Polycade has designed, built, and marketed the Polycade, the modern arcade platform and casual gaming system created to play classic and current video games right in your own home. More than a typical gaming console or computer, Polycade aims to bring the look and feel of arcade video games, and the close-knit interaction of social gaming, into the 21st century to stay.
The Polycade’s structure shows its obvious influence from arcade video game machines but notches up the design with no small amount of elegance. Polycade is meant to be mounted to your wall and has a sleek form so that it doesn’t stick out to occupy room space. However, Polycade is much more than a decorative machine; it’s also a powerful and highly-customizable video gaming platform, capable of downloading and emulating thousands of video games.
Polycade is available in a free-to-play/pay-to-play version, and a home version. The FTP/PTP version comes pre-installed with 16 Polycade-licensed games, including classics such as Asteroids, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, and more. These games can be selected and switched out for other choices, and when Polycade licenses new game titles.
The home version does not have any pre-installed games, but since it’s internet-ready and compatible with Steam, GOG, and other online game streaming services, you can download and play almost any game you know of. Emulators do come pre-installed on the home version so you can also play any retro games you have the ROM for.
