Conan Exiles (which releases soon) developer Funcom has recently announced a new “tactical adventure” game entitled Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. It was given a 2018 release window for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It’s currently in development by Bearded Ladies – a team including Hitman veterans and Executive Producer Ulf Andersson, who is best known for the Payday series.
As hinted by the name, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden has a post-apocalyptic setting. Moreover, “tactical adventure” is a strange genre, so Andersson himself explains what the developer meant. He describes it as blending “the deep and tactical combat of ‘XCOM’ with branching storylines that unfold as you explore overgrown forests and abandoned cities with your team of Mutants. Mixing that with real-time stealth gameplay gives you a unique way to approach or avoid combat situations you encounter while exploring.”
The press release of the game also revealed a summary of the background:
Few other details were revealed about the game, except that it is being developed in Unreal Engine 4. The game also features an anthropomorphic, crossbow-wielding Duck named Dux, an anthropomorphic boar with anger issues named Bormin, and a woman whose skin seemingly turns to stone (or some other substance).
“Of course the world ends – it was always just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers have turned our world into a chaotic wasteland. For the first time since 1945, nuclear weapons have been used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled. The humans are gone. The Mutants are here.”
While the premise of the game (mutants in a post-apocalyptic setting) seems pretty similar to Biomutant, it remains to be seen if its recent gameplay details align with Mutant Year Zero’s gameplay. For now, check out the game’s cinematic trailer below:
The unlikely heroes have the goal of finding the legendary Eden, which isn’t detailed but may be some form of Mutant haven. Regardless, the game definitely seems interesting, but until more information is made available, little can be inferred.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is set to release sometime in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
