It’s been awhile since we’ve checked in on Wildermyth, a promising “myth-making tactical RPG.” The game is currently in Steam Early Access, although it’s finished enough to earn “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews from users. TheGamer’s own Helen Ashcroft called it “one to watch” and found it to be one of the few games where choices really do matter. That said, the team behind Wildermyth could use a little help getting the soundtrack in good shape.
Wildermyth focuses on the ever-evolving story behind an RPG quest. Rather than end when the bad guy is killed, the devs wanted to focus more on the lives of the heroes. It works like any good Dungeons & Dragons game – players create characters only to see them fall in love, age into hardened adventurers, and make heroic sacrifices. Then they can do it all over again, using a mix of their surviving characters and a fresh cast. Music is an important part of getting players invested, however, and that’s where a new Kickstarter campaign comes in.
Candy Emberley is the composer for Wildermyth, and she wants to record the soundtrack with professional musicians. Up until now she’s been using samples, but she feels the game will have a greater level of polish if she can get live music. While the studio behind Wildermyth has contributed some funds, Emberley needs more to pay the musicians to record remotely.
Rewards for the Kickstarter campaign include the soundtrack itself, a pin, special behind-the-scenes Discord access, a music lesson with Emberley, a Dungeons & Dragons game with Emberley as DM, a producer credit, and a music box that plays Wildermyth song “Something in the Woods.”
Most interesting in the Kickstarter description is Emberley’s suggestion that Wildermyth could go up for awards when it’s fully completed. This seems mostly a guess on her part (and a case for funding the soundtrack), but it does also speak to a belief in the game. While it can’t be judged as an Early Access Title, Wildermyth does have the makings of an affecting, novel storytelling game. It just needs some more punch in its soundtrack to round out the package. We saw what a good recording did for the Hades soundtrack.
