This year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings with it a high-octane story campaign, a terrifying zombie mode, and some truly beautiful maps to get lost in. It also brings with it some familiar aspects that make it a true Call of Duty entry. One of those aspects is the continued use of field upgrades. While most of these field upgrades will feel familiar to fans of previous Call of Duty games, there are some new additions worth checking out. However, it is the utilization of the proximity mine field upgrade in Cold War that is truly worth checking out. In fact, its use makes it arguably the best field upgrade in the game.

For those unfamiliar with field upgrades, they are additional gear that offer a tactical advantage in combat. Some of the upgrades will help you prepare for battle, while others are best employed amid a firefight. You assign these upgrades to a class and it runs on a cool down system. Each upgrade has different recharge times and here are the ones offered; proximity mine, SAM turret, Jammer, field mic, trophy system, gas mine, and assault pack.

Those other upgrades are great, but the proximity mine truly shines in multiplayer. The proximity mine is a throwable mine that will explode when an enemy runs or drives over it. This makes the proximity mine perfect for hiding amongst shrubs or fallen soldiers and waiting for an unsuspecting enemy to step on it. Plus, it also destroys any vehicle that drives over it. With a recharge time of just two minutes, it is truly a great tool to have in your arsenal.

The proximity mine is great at netting a bunch of kills later on in a match. By hiding the mine in a pile of fallen soldiers (and lets be honest a lot of times those fallen soldiers may be your own player) or around a corner where heavy action occurs, you can possibly nab a few multi kills. Of course, the mine can be avoided by crouching, but let’s be real not many people are taking the time to check their surroundings or to crouch in the middle of an intense firefight.

Beyond all that, it is just fun to use the mines. There is a certain satisfaction that comes with being half a map away and hearing your mine go off and knowing you were able to gain a kill without pulling your trigger.
