For PlayStation 4 owners still struggling with stability issues, Sony has got your back with the release of firmware version 7.55. This is an incremental firmware update and is 471MB in size. As for its features, the patch note simply reads: “This system software update improves system performance.”
Assuming your PS4 or PS4 Pro was left in Rest Mode, the new firmware update will be automatically downloaded and installed. For power-conscious players, a download prompt will appear when you next start your console. You’ll then be able to download and install the update before you play.
This update contains no new features or changes that users will be able to easily spot. However, PS4 users can expect to see one more major update to the console’s firmware, in the form of version 8.00, which is currently being beta tested. This will be the last adjustment before Sony’s focus moves to the PlayStation 5.
Sony has assured gamers that the highly anticipated next-generation console will be launching this year, although most of the details surrounding the launch are as yet unknown.
PS4 fans will no doubt be hoping that this 7.55 update, along with the Firmware version 8.00, will leave them with a console that will run well into the future as gamers begin to switch over to the next generation. Making the leap is expensive, so not everyone will be able to or will want to make it immediately. This means that a reliable and stable version of the console’s firmware will be essential for these players in particular.
The PS4 was released back in November 2013, so is quickly approaching seven years old. According to Sony’s 2020 Q1 earnings report,112.3 million units have been shipped as of June 30, 2020. These figures far outstrip those of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Switch console. However, Nintendo could yet catch up since the Switch has only been around since March 2017 and had reached 55.77 million in May 2020.
As we usher in this next generation of console gaming it remains to be seen if Sony will be able to keep its crown for unit sales.
