As the invitations for the PlayStation 4’s 8.00 System Software update are starting to get sent out, a list of all the upcoming changes has been shared online. Often the target of jokes about stability, PS4’s system updates usually don’t contain much in the way of exciting features or changes. However, full-on updates that bring the system to completely new versions, such as 8.00, are almost always the exception. With the PS5 coming so soon, this could be the last major update this console gets.

Users who signed up to be in Sony’s beta program in Japan have reported that they are starting to get emails inviting them to test the upcoming 8.00 update. After translating some of the tweets, the details of the update have been confirmed to mostly focus on the Party and Messaging systems of the PS4. A full breakdown has been created of all the upcoming changes and features.

Groups will now be able to be created for party chat that will be saved after the chat has ended, allowing players to use the same group again with the same members even after the chat has ended. Messaging integration has been added to parties, and will also work in the new group system as well to chat with established groups through messages. More minor functionality has been added to parties, messaging, and privacy.

Other minor additions include a few new parental control changes, microphone mute settings, communities, and events. There is still no date for when update 8.00 will go live for all users, or when beta testers in other regions will start to get access to this version.

This late in the PS4’s life cycle, these smaller, quality of life type changes are more expected than any substantial overhauls. While many like to make jokes at Sony’s expense for updates that seemingly do nothing, this 8.00 update proves that they are at least committed to improving the experience of PS4 users for the remainder of the generation. Naturally, their focus will shift to the PS5 once that launches sometime this holiday, but the incredibly large install base of the PS4 should remain a priority for them at least for a while, especially if the amount of PS5 units at launch isn’t as high as they’d like.
