The PS5 was released at the end of 2020, and despite all of the issues related to the pandemic, the next-generation gaming system is flying off of physical and digital shelves. Not everyone has made the transition from the PS4, though, and many are wondering if 2021 is the best time to upgrade to the latest PlayStation hardware.
It ultimately comes down to personal preference and making sound financial decisions. That being said, here are a few reasons to snag a PS5 in 2021 and a handful of reasons you can wait until 2022.
10 Not To: Hard To Find
Humans are interesting in that some people love a good challenge, while others avoid stress at all costs. There will be people reading this that love a good chase, and securing a PS5 is an adrenaline high worth the price of admission. Given the worth is currently still dealing with a pandemic, stress and anxiety are at an all-time high. Chasing after a PS5 online is a stressor people can avoid, and if someone’s currently on the fence it may be best for them to wait until the next-gen console is a bit more readily available.
9 To Own: The DualSense
Is the DualSense controller on the PS5 a gimmick? It’s currently too early to tell if its new features will be adopted long-term, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth experiencing. The adaptive triggers evolve the gaming experience and allow players to experience some unique feedback that helps with immersion. It’s hard to justify spending $400 or $500 just for a controller, but one could argue that the DualSense will likely see its best days during the early years of the PS5 when developers are learning how to create on the new hardware.
8 Not To: Building Library
The problem new video game consoles always have is that the native library is thin and takes a couple of years to build out. Many third-party developers release games across generations until install bases build-up, and with the Xbox Series X and the PS5, those platform holders are also releasing their first-party games this way.
Unless someone is a huge Demon’s Souls fan, there’s no reason to rush into a purchase in 2021. Wait it out and see if the library on the PS5 reaches a place where it feels comfortable to finally upgrade.
7 To Own: Old Console’s Old
Those with expendable income and the ability to spend a good chunk of money tend to be early adopters. They’re the type of people who likely love technology and like own the new thing on the market, whether or not they actually need it. The moment the PS5 released the PS4 was old news and these type of people were ready to move on. Readers going through this list need to look inside themselves and come to an understanding if they’re this type of person or not. With the PS4 being old news, people can also trade it in for extra cash towards the PS5.
6 Not To: Most Expensive
Not only is the PS5 the more expensive entry into next-gen with the Xbox Series S coming in $100 cheaper than the cheapest PS5 console, it is home to games that are now $70. The fact that AAA games have remained at $60 for two whole generations is astounding and a price increase was always inevitable. Those who already own a PS4 should hold off until they need to upgrade since almost every PlayStation exclusive outside of Demon’s Souls is also releasing on the PS4 in the foreseeable future.
5 To Own: Track Record
The PS4 was an extraordinary console when it comes to value as it offered players phenomenal exclusives and a platform to play plenty of third-party and indie titles from the world’s best developers. There’s no reason to believe that the PS5’s life cycle will be any different. Launch titles like Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have already begun where PS4 left off when it comes to high-quality exclusive games consumers can only experience on a PlayStation console. Buying with confidence is easy when the last 7 years proved the value in buying the last PlayStation gaming hardware.
4 Not To: Lack Of Memory Expansion
One of the oddest things about the PS5 is that it not only has less internal memory for players to save their games than the Xbox Series X, but it also lacks approved external expansion for memory.
Unlike the Xbox Series X that allows even non-SSD external hard drives to store games and play them, the PS5 doesn’t give their owners that privilege. Multiplayer gamers will see the 667 GB of usable storage on the PS5 quickly shrink and disappear as games like Call of Duty: Warzone takes up a good chunk of it all on their own.
3 To Own: Less Compromised
Cyberpunk 2077 is a shining example as to how last generation consoles can actively hold back developers. Technology is always advancing and evolving and in order to move forward, it has to detach itself from the past. Unfortunately, developers are now creating experiences for much more powerful machines, but at the same time have to make compromises so the game runs well on the PS4 and the PS5. It might be best to purchase a PS5 solely due to the fact that it will have the best version of the game in comparison to other PlayStation platforms.
2 Not To: PS4 Versions
Everyone doesn’t have the $400 or $500 it requires to get the PS5 sitting around burning a hole in their pocket. For many, it’s a large purchase that requires some thought and consideration. If someone already owns a PS4 then they might not need to be an early adopter to next-generation console gaming. The main reason for this is that most of the games that have been released on PS5 also have a PS4 version. With Horizon Forbidden West also confirmed to have a PS4 version when it releases in 2021, it seems people can wait to grab a PS5.
1 To Own: Best Version Of Games
The great thing about the latest generation of consoles is that they both happen to be backward compatible with their previous iteration. The PS5, like the Xbox Series X, allows gamers to play most of the games released on the Xbox One and PS4 family of consoles, but with added benefits. These benefits include reduced loading times and visual improvements for most games and they occur automatically in many instances. This means games who own the PS5 can play the best version of every game in their library.
