In light of E3 2020’s cancelation due to the Coronavirus crisis, many plans revolving around video game development and announcements have needed to be altered. New information has surfaced that points to PS5 and Xbox Series X reveals being much sooner than many may have anticipated, that being the PlayStation 5. Apparently, Sony had been planning on releasing details on the PS5 in May before all this started.
This much comes from sources speaking to VGC, and that reveal is now in question. It’s entirely possible that Sony moves forward with its PS5 plans in May, but it’s also possible that it’s later, according to various analysts. It may be even re-thinking that strategy thanks to how long the COVID-19 pandemic has lasted, and games like the Last of Us 2 being delayed due to the crisis points to Sony trying its best to handle the times with as much professionalism as it can.
E3 is often considered the Christmas of video games, with many video game declarations coming forth in just a few days’ time, and with that the window, Sony cannot follow up a May reveal with a standard E3 presentation. Sony already revealed the new DualSense controller that comes alongside the PS5, an interesting move to show the controller before the console, which was also a result of COVID-19.
The DualSense controller became a meme instantly online, beloved by fans and belittled by others, but the change is probably a good thing, as the controller design has had little progress for decades before the DualSense. It will be intriguing to see how the final design of the PS5 matches with the controller.
Microsoft is rumored to have massive announcements in May as well, as the company may also be planning its own reveal in the same month. With E3 not in the picture, it leaves fans wondering when a digital show will happen, and which company will shoot its shot first.
