Last Friday, June 12, Sony held a Livestream event to showcase the upcoming PlayStation 5. In many ways, the event was the kind of show that gamers have wanted from E3 press conferences for years. There were no weird theatrics, just game trailer after game trailer broken up by short introductory presentations by Sony executives and Game Developers. Twenty-one titles - some completely new and some previously announced - were showcased at the presentation and the actual color and shape of the new console was revealed.
However, only five of the games shown on the virtual stage will be totally exclusive to the PS5. Eight Games will be available on PS5 and PC. Six of the games shown will be on PS5, XBOX Series X, and PC. The exclusivity status of one game is also still unclear. Let’s take a look at which games will be available where and why.
Games That Will Only Be On PS5
Unsurprisingly, all of the games that will be exclusive to the PS5 are either being published by Sony, developed by studios that Sony owns outright or is in the process of acquiring, or both. In some cases, Sony also owns the intellectual property rights to the subject of the game.
The biggest splash of the show was Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is scheduled for release sometime in 2020. Contrary to rumors, the game is a standalone title, not a DLC to Marvel’s Spider-Man. Sony both owns the video game rights to Spider-Man and all Spider-Man related characters and is in the process of acquiring the game’s developer, Insomniac Games.
The next game in the long-running Ratchet & Clank series, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will also be exclusive to PS5 for much the same reason as Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game is being developed by Insomniac Games, and Sony has published every Ratchet & Clank game to date. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has no release window at this time.
Gran Turismo 7, like all numbered Gran Turismo games, is being made by Polyphony Digital. As Polyphone is a Sony first-party studio, the game will be available only on the PS5. In true Gran Turismo fashion, there is no time table for its release.
Possibly the best looking trailer of the showcase was for another PS5 exclusive game, Horizon 2: Forbidden West. Sony owns the game’s developer, Guerilla Games. Horizon 2: Forbidden West does not have a release date at this time.
Unlike the other PS5 exclusive games, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is not developed by a Sony-owned studio. Sumo Digital is making Sackboy: A Big Adventure and has made several console agnostic games as an independent studio. Sony does own the intellectual property rights to Sackboy because they published the games that the character previously appeared in and will be publishing this game as well. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is scheduled to be released in 2020.
Games That Will Be On PS5 And PC
The vast majority of games shown at this press conference will be developed by independent studios, have pages on Steam or The Epic Games Store, or have announced that they will be available on PC. Many of these titles are early enough in development that exclusivity deals are still in the works so it’s possible that these may make the jump to Xbox Series X sometime after their initial release. It is also unclear whether all these games will be launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC or if there will be some delay between versions.
The website for Square-Enix’s enigmatic Project Athia clearly displays a PC logo. While the publisher has a close relationship with Sony, often releasing games first on PlayStation platforms, they also release games simultaneously across all platforms. Since Project Athia is probably not even a final title, it is very uncertain which type of release it will be. Project Athia has no release date.
Stray, the indie game with the cute cat and sad robots show at the PS5 reveal, already has a page on Steam. The game will be published by Annapurna Interactive, which is best known for putting out smaller Indie Games on various platforms. Stray is scheduled for a 2021 release.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits has a page on The Epic Games Store and so will be available on PC. The game is the first major game project from Ember Lab and will be released in 2020.
GhostWire Tokyo, the game who’s Creative Director Ikumi Nakamura made a big splash at E3 2019, is being published by Bethesda. That company has a history of being fairly independent and the GhostWire Tokyo website contains a PC logo so it will definitely not be completely exclusive to PS5. GhostWire Tokyo is set to be released in 2021.
Godfall, the ‘Slasher-looter’ under development by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox Publishing, was shown as part of the PC Gamer showcase just one day after it was shown at the PS5 reveal. While this makes it clear that Godfall will be on PC, no announcement about the Microsoft platform has been made. Godfall is scheduled for a 2020 release date making it one of the few possible PS5 launch titles.
Heart Machine Game’s follow up to Hyperlight Drifter, the game titled Solar Ash Kingdom currently has a page on The Epic Games Store. The initial E3 2019 trailer for Solar Ash Kingdom showed an Epic Games Store logo. The game’s appearance on the PS5 reveal most likely points to a general console release and not an exclusivity deal, but the lack of official announcements makes everything unclear for now. Solar Ash Kingdom is due for release in 2021.
Bugsnax, the adorably silly follow-up to Octodad: Dadliest Catch from Young Horses appears on The Epic Games Store as well as the PS5 Reveal lineup. Octodad appeared on all platforms eventually, so it’s likely that Bugsnax will be a timed console exclusive for PS5 at most. Bugsnax is another possible launch title for PS5 with a 2020 release date.
DeathLoop is a game from Arkane studios that seems like a version of Dishonored that doesn’t punish players for using the powers given to them in the game. The website for DeathLoop clearly states that the game will be available on PS5 and PC. DeathLoop is scheduled for a 2020 release so possibly one more launch title for the PS5.
Games Already On PS4, PC and XBOX
Nothing that Rockstar games can say about Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced changes the fact that a version of the game is already available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The enhancements are scheduled to be finished in 2021.
Too Soon To Tell
While Returnal had a short trailer mostly focused on its aesthetics at the PS5 reveal, it is unclear what that implies for the exclusivity of its release. The trailer showcased a middle-aged woman in a spacesuit exploring, avoiding dangers, and briefly fighting enemies. Returnal is being made by Housemarque, a studio that has produced console exclusives for Sony and multi-platform games. Since the studio is independent and there is no release date for the title it is not safe to assume anything about the exclusivity of the game’s release.
Games That Will Be On All Platforms
The following games have already been announced for PC and the Xbox Series X in addition to appearing part of the PS5 reveal.
- Oddworld: Soulstorm (Release Date: 2020) Hitman III (Release Date: 2021) Little Devil Inside (Release Date: 2020) NBA 2K21 (Release Date: 2020) Resident Evil: Village (Release Date: 2021) Pragmata (Release Date: 2022)
