Ikai is an upcoming psychological horror game from indie game developer, Endflame, and is set to be released for PC via Steam sometime in 2021.

For those looking to find out more about the game, a new demo has been released and is available on itch.io.

Ikai is a game set in the era of Feudal Japan with the barrier between the living world and the afterlife having been broken. The game centers around the past and present spirits of Naoko, who was the priestess of the temple that players presumably explore as they try to solve the mystery and seal the barrier back up. Of course, this will be easier said than done as players encounter Japanese folklore monsters, ghosts, and spirits throughout their journey.

It appears as though stealth will play a big role in Ikai, given the note that, “Nothing bad will happen in Ikai if you do not disturb the devil,” appears in a press release, while, “Be silent, under no circumstances should you disturb the evil,” shows up directly on the Steam store page. The playable character is also described as a “defenseless main character incapable of attacking the evil creatures,” so players had better brush up on their stealth skills.

The gameplay trailer and images provide a glimpse into a dark and ominous world that seems to check off most of the survival horror checkboxes, but the overall encounters look a tad tame from the brief amount of content available. The footage gives off a more uneasy vibe, than a “chilled-to-the-core” kind of feeling… that is until a large, long-fingered, devil-like creature appears from a dark hallway and hastily makes its way towards the player. Its dark silhouette alone is enough to send shivers down your spine.

No word yet as to when exactly Ikai might be releasing next year, but hopefully player feedback from the new demo will allow the game to be the best (and scariest) that it can be.
