One of those questions asked about potential resolutions and frame rates on each of its various platforms–a common question for games that straddle the current and previous generations of consoles. Double Fine still doesn’t have an answer as they’re currently working on Psychonauts’ final optimization, but the one thing they can confirm “is that HDR will only be available on Xbox Series X and S."

This answer didn’t exactly go over well on the ResetEra thread where it was posted. Some even went so far as to accuse Double Fine of forgoing PlayStation optimization to ensure Psychonauts 2 performs best on Xbox Series X|S. After all, Double Fine is a Microsoft-owned studio now.

That’s a little unfair, though. Given that HDR is only working on Xbox Series X|S and not the Xbox One X, it sounds like this is a hardware issue unrelated to platform favoritism. Xbox Series X|S just has the most juice, so it’s easier to display fancy things like HDR. And besides, it sounds like Double Fine is still figuring things out, so it’s possible that the PS5 will also get HDR support at a later date.

Psychonauts 2 arrives on August 25 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. You can check out a bunch of new gameplay in the trailer shown at Xbox’s E3 presentation just a few days ago.
