Double Fine Productions has released a trailer containing pre-alpha footage for Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a PlayStation VR spin-off to the cult classic platformer.
While they are hard at work on a proper sequel, Double Fine is treating fans to a look into its side-project, a PlayStation VR spin-off that will reintroduce players to the heady world of Psychonauts. Picking up right at the first game’s cliffhanger, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will bridge the gap between the original game and the upcoming sequel, which means some minor spoilers are a given.
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin joins our hero Raz, who has finally achieved his dream of becoming a full-fledged Psychonaut, on his mission to rescue the Grand Head of the Psychonauts, Truman Zannotto. Joining him are agents Sasha Nein, Milla Vodello, Coach Oleander, and his girlfriend (maybe) Lili, who happens to be Zannotto’s daughter. Raz and crew are in a jet on their way to Psychonaut headquarters. Since they’re strapped to their seats, unable to move about the cabin, it is a fine time to test some of those nifty psychic powers – many of which will be familiar to those who played the original game.
Clairvoyance has Raz jumping into the minds of other characters, allowing him to see the world through their eyes. This works beautifully with the game’s first-person perspective. Psychic Poke will nudge other characters or objects, and even open hatches. Telekinesis allows Raz to pick up objects and move them around at will. Pyrokinesis works pretty much as expected, letting players burn things to a crisp. Finally, Psi Blast shoots a psychic bolt of energy from Raz’s mind, breaking objects and generally causing destruction. As the trailer shows, the environment is very interactive and, with a full set of psychic powers, a lot is possible.
