Pyramid Head is one of the most frightening creatures in the Silent Hill franchise, yet its iconic status has led to it being included in several Konami crossover games, including ones meant for kids.
The Pyramid Head concept debuted in Silent Hill 2, where it represented James Sunderland’s desire to be punished for the death of his wife. The design of the Pyramid Head was meant to evoke the outfits worn by executioners, which was an important part of the history of the town of Silent Hill. The player has to battle several Pyramid Heads throughout Silent Hill 2, as it fights with a massive knife that needs to be avoided. Pyramid Heads would appear in different forms in later entries in the series, such as in Silent Hill: The Arcade and Silent Hill: The Escape, as well as having a role in the Silent Hill movies.
Silent Hill became one of Konami’s best-known franchises, and the company wanted to use parts of it in crossover titles. As horrifying as Pyramid Head is, it fell into this category better than anyone, as its design could be simplified in order to make it suitable to appear in games rated for all ages. It’s for this reason why Pyramid Head went on to appear in games like Super Bomberman R.
When it comes to Konami crossover games, a chibi version of Pyramid Head has made the cut on several occasions. This is why he can be seen playing sports in New International Track & Field on the Nintendo DS, as well as racing go-karts in Krazy Kart Racing. He has been joined by other Konami characters on these occasions, including the Belmonts from Castlevania, Vic Viper from the Gradius series, and Gray Fox from Metal Gear Solid.
Pyramid Head is coming to Dead by Daylight (alongside Cheryl Mason from Silent Hill 3) which is a crossover that makes a lot of sense. It’s odd that Konami would choose to represent Silent Hill in games that can be enjoyed by kids, but it’s a fun bit of fanservice nonetheless. If the rumors regarding a Silent Hill reboot are false, then these charming cameos might be all we see of Pyramid Head for the near future.
