Bethesda has announced via Twitter that Quake II and III will be made free this week as a thank-you for the over $30,000 raised during QuakeCon at Home. Quake II will be free for 72 hours, starting the 12th, while Quake III will be free for 72 hours, starting the 17th.
Bethesda’s 25th annual QuakeCon concluded on the 9th of August, following a 60 hour global livestream, packed with live concerts, developer panels, the conclusion to the Quake World Championship, plus so much more. Originally cancelled, QuakeCon’s 25th iteration was moved online and generated $30,686.48 in revenue for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Direct Relief, The Trevor Project and UNICEF, and to thank the donors, Bethesda announced that Quake II and III would be made free for a limited time in the coming week, downloadable via the Bethesda Launcher.
The announcement was made on Bethesda’s Twitter as the total donation amount was revealed.
Through the duration of QuakeCon, Quake I was free to download, with a $10,000 donation incentive for Quake II to be made free following the stream. There were no initial plans to have a charity incentive for making Quake III free for the public, but the incredible success of the charity money raised from the event was enough to coerce Bethesda into unlocking the highly praised third installment as well.
For those who missed QuakeCon, and thus missed your chance on snagging Quake I, fear not! The game is still on sale, 70% off on the Bethesda store, so get it while it’s cheap. But that’s not all! Quake II and III are all also 70% on the store, so for those who can’t bear to wait any longer to play those two installments, you can purchase them to own for very little cost. Quake IV is not available on the Bethesda store, but the highly slept-on fourth installment is available on Steam for full price. Numerous other Bethesda games, such as DOOM I and II, Morrowind and Oblivion and Fallout 2 and 3 will be on sale as well on the Bethesda store.
Don’t miss your chance to relive the shooter series that pioneered the behemoth that is the modern online shooter industry. For younger players who missed the fabled Quake days, this isn’t an experience you’ll want to miss, so gear up and get bunnyhopping. The Strogg aren’t going to defeat themselves.
