With massive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart billboards appearing around Glasgow, many have predicted a potential reveal at next week’s The Game Awards. The third-person shooter platform game, which has been developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS5, is set for release in the first half of 2021.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a continuation to Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, will follow Ratchet and Clank as they travel across multiple worlds to stop an evil emperor from ending organic life in all universes via a dimensional collapse. Although the game shares similarities with its predecessor, it is a standalone title. The main playable character, Ratchet, and his robotic sidekick Clank will be accompanied by a playable female character named Lombax.
Ratchet will have access to an array of weapons and gadgets to defeat his enemies and complete mission tasks. The game will benefit from the PS5’s Dualsense controller, Tempest Engine and ray tracing hardware to support superior haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio and real-time ray tracing effects, which promises to enhance the immersive experience of players.
Insomniac Games had expressed hopes that the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart would coincide with the launch of the PS5, so the game is expected to be released sooner rather than later. In early November, and ad for the PS5, in which the narrator mentions New Worlds To Explore, featured the game, indicating that its release was imminent. Aside from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Bluepoint Games’ Demon’s Souls remake and the preinstalled Astro’s Playroom are among the PS5 exclusive launch titles.
The Game Awards, scheduled for December 10, will be a virtual event this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event can be watched as a free digital live stream across more than 45 global video platforms, airing in 4K UHD from studio locations with no in-person audience in Los Angeles, Tokyo and London.
