We’re two weeks out from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart arriving on the PS5 and giving us our first look at what a first-party studio can do with the PS5’s next-gen hardware. And to get everyone up to speed on what’s going on with Ratch, Clank, and this brand new Lombax, Sony has released a brand new story trailer that summarizes everything you need to know in under a minute.
Honestly, that might not be quite enough time to give you a solid foundation heading into Rift Apart, so we’ll help plug whatever plot holes the trailer leaves behind.
Rift Apart starts with everyone’s favorite Lombax hero Ratchet (and his robotic companion Clank) fighting Dr. Nefarious as he tries to steal the Dimensionator, a powerful Lombax artifact that’s capable of tearing rifts through space and time into alternate dimensions. During the fight, Nefarious triggers the Dimensionator, opens a rift, and Ratchet and Clank get separated as they tumble through.
They both wind up in an alternate reality where Nefarious has traded in his Ph.D. to become Emperor of the universe. Clank meets up with a female Lombax named Rivet who is actually that dimension’s version of Ratchet (interdimensional timelines are complicated, I know), and they both team up to find the real Ratchet and takedown Emperor Nefarious.
Expect a bunch of classic characters to make appearances, such as Skidd McMarx and Rusty Pete, but slightly different. Maybe not completely gender-bent like Rivet, but close.

Insomniac has also released an enormous list of accessibility settings that are certain to set the standard for basically every game to come after Rift Apart.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart arrives on June 11 exclusively for the PS5. Although, there might be a PC launch sometime later.
