The debut trailer for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Insomniac Games’ upcoming PS5 sequel, rocked the gaming world last week with its gorgeous visuals and a brand new character: a lady Lombax. I guess all of the pent up thirst from this coronavirus pandemic got to everyone because the internet has been flooded with love for his mysterious lady. Thankfully, she isn’t just for show.

In a Tweet yesterday, Insomniac confirmed that the lady Lombax will be a playable character in Rift Apart. This isn’t a new thing for Ratchet & Clank as the series has previously allowed players to swap between its titular stars. Spin-off All 4 One even let players control Captain Quark and Dr. Nefarious, which was kind of neat.

What makes this so cool is that Insomniac seems to be setting up a theory that she may be a version of Ratchet from an alternate dimension. Rift Apart has you jumping between dimensions almost instantaneously, so there’s a chance this lady Lombax is a reflective counterpart of the series’ main character.

For those invested in the series, the introduction of this character is a pretty big deal. One of the main narrative beats throughout the Ratchet & Clank games has been Ratchet dealing with being the only known Lombax in the galaxy. While that changed in Crack In Time, we’ve still only seen two different Lombaxes in over 10 games.

With the lady Lombax now being integral to the plot and becoming a playable character, maybe Ratchet will finally get one step closer to understanding who he really is. This lady could also introduce a completely new playstyle, which would go a long way to mix-up the over 15-year-old franchise.

Whatever happens with her and Ratchet, it’s great to see Insomniac not forget about its original PS2 darling. Ratchet & Clank was always the best of Sony’s big mascot push during the early 2000s and I’m happy it has managed to stick around for four generations of PlayStation consoles. The PS4 reboot was a bit of a misstep, but Rift Apart already seems like a tremendous improvement over its predecessor. Let’s hope Insomniac smacks it out of the park come the PS5’s launch.
