Ready Player Two, the sequel to Ernest’s Cline’s bestseller Ready Player One, has been officially announced and is set for release this November.

Ernest Cline’s debut novel, Ready Player One, was released in 2011 to critical and commercial acclaim. The story surrounds a boy named Wade Watts who is obsessed with a virtual reality game entitled The Oasis. Once the creator of the game, James Halliday, passes away, he creates a challenge for players to discover Easter Eggs he has hidden throughout the game. Doing so would require a masterful knowledge of 80’s pop culture and completing this would grant the winner Halliday’s fortune as well as control over The Oasis.

The sequel, Ready Player Two, has been in the works for some time with Cline always intending to continue the series.

“I had to start writing the sequel last year while the movie was being finished just to stay ahead of the curve,” Cline said in a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a good problem to have, but if this movie does well, the following week they’ll decide whether or not they want to make Ready Player Two, and it occurred to me I should finish. I’d always intended to write more in the series, but I never imagined the movie would get done before I finished writing them. So, I had to kick it into high gear.”

Ready Player One was officially adapted back in 2018. Cline co-wrote the script with Zak Penn and it was directed and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film opened to average reviews and reception, so while it doesn’t look like a sequel is on the horizon, the second book is finally about to come out.

With the release date slated for November 24, there’s not much longer to wait, but with no plot synopsis yet announced, there’s little idea of what the novel will cover. Will it surround the same characters or jump into the future? We’ll have to wait and see.
