Microsoft Flight Simulator is coming to Steam with full VR support later this year.

Microsoft Flight Simulator begins its closed beta test today. If you haven’t already requested a flight plan via the Xbox Insider website, you’re probably out of luck at this point, but we have some good news: you’ll only have to wait for a month-and-a-half to get the game. And now you can get it on Steam too.

Just announced today, Microsoft Flight Simulator will launch on Steam on August 18th along with the Microsoft Store. You can pre-order the most elaborate and detailed flight simulator the world has ever seen right here, right now.

And best of all, it won’t come on 10 discs if you get it on Steam.

But if that wasn’t enough, we got some hardware announcements too. TrackIR will be supported on day 1, with full VR support to come later this year.

For those unaware, TrackIR is a head-tracking device that keeps track of where your head is pointed to display the appropriate view on your monitor. It’s like a step towards VR as it gives that mouse-less range of views but at a fraction of the cost. The only downside is that you have to keep your eyes pointed in the same spot even as your head moves simply because your monitor stays in the same spot.

VR support will come to Microsoft Flight Simulator later this fall with the launch of the HP Reverb G2 headset. Designed in collaboration with both Microsoft and Valve, the HP Reverb G2 promises to be better than an Oculus and fully compatible with your VR library.

Besides the fancy VR stuff, Microsoft promises that Flight Simulator will remain fully compatible with a range of different peripheral makers, including Honeycomb Aeronautical, Logitech G, Thrustmaster, Virtual Fly, and others.

Free world updates, paid theme DLCs, and creator content is all waiting to be delivered after the game launches in August, so stay tuned for more.
