Red Candle Games, the studio behind indie darlings like Detention and Devotion, are working on a new game. This mysterious new project will be the third major game by the Taiwanese developer.
Unfortunately, that’s all Red Candles are willing to share at the moment. Any other details are non-existent. It’s great to know the studio is still actively developing games, though. Especially since its previous game, Devotion, faced so much controversy that it was removed from Steam. Specifically for an in-game poster with a note that translates to “Xi Jinping Winnie-the-Pooh moron.” Xi Jinping, the current president of China, isn’t particularly fond of comparisons to Pooh Bear. This lead to review bombing campaigns across several platforms, with many Chinese players upset over the line. Even to this day, Devotion has not remerged on Steam or any other prominent digital storefront. Sadly, the chances of it returning at all are unlikely.
Red Candles announced its new game in the below Tweet.
Thankfully, none of that was enough to discourage Red Candles from working on new projects. The studio has also been busy working with Netflix on a live-action series adaption of Detention, which just came out this past weekend. If you happen to have a subscription, Netflix’s take on Detention is available here. At only 50 minutes per episode, it’s quite a short series to watch. There aren’t any major reviews for it up now, so who knows if it’s any good, but it’s not a considerable time investment. It might be worth binging on a slow afternoon!
It’s great to see such a small studio flourish like this, even after wrestling with the baggage and discourse circulating Devotion. That mess didn’t ruin the developers, despite how turbulent that period was. Hopefully, whatever Red Candles’ next project is, it isn’t put through the wringer like that again.
