It’s pretty hard to be a true outlaw in Red Dead Online without your trusty steed. From racing against other players to raiding a bandit hideout, horses are a critical component of this hit online game. And most of them cost a pretty penny.
Some are better than others in different situations. Rockstar has added horses with a variety of stats; the animals with higher base Health can look a predator in the eye and hardly flinch, while those with better Stamina can run across the region without breaking a sweat. Hopeful outlaws are given the freedom to choose based on their playstyle.
10 War: Gypsy Cob
The Gypsy Cob is one of the newer additions to Red Dead Online as part of the Naturalist profession line. Maybe Rockstar is doing everyone a favor by introducing this hardy breed; they knew that players would be stuck on horseback, facing down a charging Grizzly Bear with their wimpy sedative rifles, hoping to get a sample before they’re mauled to death. Either way, they rank high in overall Health and Stamina. And they even have an impressive Speed stat of 5. Not bad for a Naturalist mount!
9 War: Turkoman
This beautiful horse is perfect for players with a hit-and-run attack style. Turkomans have a solid Health rating of 3, but their key advantage is in their Speed and Acceleration of 6 and 5, respectively. Players will sadly have to wait until they’re at least Level 56 to purchase a Turkoman. Plus, these horses will cost at least $925 or 38 gold bars.
However, it’s worth noting that the stats of the Gold, Dark Bay, and Silver variations are roughly the same regardless of price. These animals will definitely reward players for their patience (and cash spent) no matter what. The Turkoman’s toughness and agility make them highly desired by this game’s cowboys and cowgirls.
8 War: Breton
In an intense combat situation, Bretons are the best choice. They’re tough, brave, and not as slow as other tanky horses in Red Dead Online. The Mealy Dapple Bay and Steel Gray coat variations are the hardest to unlock, as players will need to reach Bounty Hunter Rank 20 and pay $950 cash. But they have the best stats by far. This faithful steed is guaranteed to carry players who want to shoot their way through the Wild West, since its Health rating is so high, it’s practically invincible.
7 Race: Criollo
Though players will need to reach Rank 20 in the Collector profession, the race-worthy Criollo is worth the effort. Especially since it is easier to rank up as a Collector than in any other Frontier Pursuit. Criollos boast the highest possible Speed rating of 7 and a very solid Acceleration rating of 5. Their Health stat isn’t too bad either, especially for a speedy horse.
The Bay Frame Overo and Marble Sabino coat colors are the most popular Criollo variations. They’ll also cost a pretty penny once unlocked, at $950 each. But these beautiful horses are extremely agile and can provide a significant advantage in Races.
6 Race: Missouri Fox Trotter
The Missouri Fox Trotter may not be the fastest horse in the game, but its combination of high Speed and Stamina allows it to surge past most sprinter breeds, such as Thoroughbreds. This horse also has one of the best Acceleration ratings in Red Dead Online. Obviously, players with this trusty steed will win a lot of competitive Horse Race Events.
The beautiful Missouri Fox Trotter will set players back a whopping $950, plus they’ll have to wait until Level 58. Maybe they can recoup some of that cash after winning 20+ races.
5 Race: Norfolk Roadster
Again, this horse breed takes some effort to unlock, but it’s worth it. The Dappled Buckskin and Spotted Tricolor variations of the Norfolk Roadster are probably the best horses for Race situations in the game. And they’re pretty. But hardcore bandits wouldn’t care about that.
Players who want this premium Norfolk Roadster will need to achieve Moonshiner Role Rank 2o and also cough up $950 cash. After all, Red Dead Online Moonshiners need a fast horse to outrun the law (and thirsty bar patrons).
4 All-Around: American Paint
The Gray Overo variation of the American Paint horse breed is a solid choice for players seeking an all-around mount. Available at Level 55 and costing 17 Gold Bars, this mount is considered the strongest in the ‘Work’ category. None of its stats are particularly stellar but none are bad either. The American Paint has a Health of 2, Stamina of 2, Speed of 4, and Acceleration of 4. It’s safe to say that this horse can be strong in any situation.
3 All-Around: Kladruber
At first glance, the Kladruber doesn’t look very impressive, especially for aspiring Traders. But players who rank up in this profession will earn access to the Silver and Dapple Rose Gray coat variations. This is actually the perfect ‘workhorse,’ since its stats are all reasonably high and evenly balanced: 3 Health, 3 Stamina, 4 Speed, and 5 Acceleration. Useful for all types of encounters!
As with most other Pursuit Rank 20 horses, the best Kladrubers will cost $950. But seasoned bandits won’t have a problem earning enough cash to buy this mount. Its flexibility across different Red Dead Online situations will give players a strong edge.
2 All-Around: Arabian (White)
Ah, the Arabian. There aren’t many variations of this horse compared to other breeds and each coat color has slightly different stats. The White Arabian is one of the most popular horses in both Red Dead Online and Red Dead Redemption 2; it’s also one of the hardest to get. Unfortunately, players will need to wait until Level 66. And that’s before shelling out $850 in cash.
This horse is in the Superior class, which means that it is very easy to handle. Arabians can be skittish in really wild situations but their overall Speed of 6 and Acceleration of 6 will allow players to escape if needed. Who doesn’t love riding around on a white stallion in the Wild West?
1 All-Around: Arabian (Black)
The Black Arabian is, by far, the best all-around horse available in Red Dead Online. It’s also the rarest. And that’s not because it’s difficult to find; this horse just takes forever to unlock and it’s wildly expensive. Players must reach Level 70 and pay 42 Gold Bars to obtain the Black Arabian. No small effort to say the least.
However, this mount’s stats will allow cowboys and cowgirls to dominate almost any situation in the game. It boasts a Speed of 6, Acceleration of 6, Stamina of 2.5, and Health of 2.5. Not the beefiest horse but it’s strong enough to survive combat, it can accelerate immediately, and it can sprint across an entire region without breaking a sweat. The elite Black Arabian is the ultimate goal for a true outlaw.
