There’s a bridge in Red Dead Online that looks like any other rope bridge crossing a rocky gorge. But this one’s special. Hit it with a hatchet and it’ll jumpin’ and jivin’ like a horny toad that’s eaten a way-too-spicy burrito. Step atop that bridge and it’ll launch you literally into the stratosphere.
Here we have Reddit user RobotZebra1 demonstrating how the glitch works. After tossing a hatchet at the bridge, it starts wildly gyrating such that as soon as he steps on it he gets launched a few dozen feet in the air. However, upon landing back on the still-vibrating bridge, he then gets yeeted many miles above the ground.
This is but a demonstration. For the best example so far, we turn to Reddit user k0luos for this gem. A slight tap and suddenly he’s at the same altitude as space satellites orbiting the globe.
The hilarious part of this glitch is the comedic timing. He spends a full 40 seconds accelerating upward without a care in the world, looking down at the rapidly receding landscape as though it were a mere curiosity. Only after reaching the apex of his arc does k0luos’s character start screaming bloody murder as he falls for a full minute.
Curiously, Red Dead’s designers seem to have included code for terminal velocity in this game even though no normal circumstances would result in a cowboy falling from such a great height.
The glitch isn’t limited to upward momentum, though. This unfortunate soul got a one-way ticket to some serious road rash after the glitch sent him on a very flat trajectory skimming above the desert.
Sadly, all good glitches must come to an end. Not 12 hours after the glitch was discovered, Rockstar patched the dancing bridge by installing a rock on top of the wooden planks.
But for a brief, shining moment, Red Dead Online was less a game about cowboys and more a game about astronauts. May we forever cherish that moment.
