Two years after it came out, Red Dead Redemption II continues to deliver a solid gaming experience. Rockstar developed this game with love, and it shows. There are plenty of activities to do in-game if you want to take a break from the outlaw life. For example, you can pick up fishing; this mini-game is quite challenging as you’ll have to pay attention to baits, lures, weather, and fish locations.
However, it is a rewarding hobby, as well. Fishing provides the player with fish they can cook to restore health, stamina, or dead eye cores. You can also release a fish you caught to gain honor, sell it for profit or donate it to the camp. Whatever you choose to do, you should know which places are the good spots for fishing.
10 The Mouths Of Waterfalls
It doesn’t matter the game you’re playing; when you see a waterfall, you should check it out to see if there’s something behind it. Most of the time, secrets are hiding behind the water.
However, in Red Dead Redemption 2, waterfalls have another purpose, as fishes, especially the bigger ones, appear more in the mouths of waterfalls. This happens because the water there is more has more oxygen in it. So if you’re struggling to catch something, try there.
9 The River North Of Window Rock
Go to your map and look for the spot where Whinyard Strait and Granite Pass cross each other. This spot is at the west of Fort Wallace and north of Window Rock.
There you’ll find a river that isn’t very wide, which allows players to pull up fish quickly. Also, there are many Sockeye Salmons in this river, and they have a pretty good sell price.
8 O’Creagh’s Run
If you’re fishing to make money, then you should be looking for Sockeye Salmons. These guys have a price of $4.25 in Valentine, New Hanover, and West Elizabeth, or $5.31 in St. Denis, Rhodes, Blackwater, and Tumbleweed.
The best place to find this type of fish is in O’Creagh’s Run, near Hamish Sinclair’s Home. Once there, you can use river lures to catch them. It’s also a good idea to go when the weather is cloudy.
7 The Swamp At Lagras
You’ll find this fishing spot north of Saint Dennis, its a nice place to fish because you have a bait shop next to it. The woman in the shop sells numerous types of bait and three types of lures, and you can sell her whatever you caught. This swamp is a location you should think of exploring as it’s the location of the legendary alligator.
6 The Northern Rivers
There are several rivers with clean and cold water in the north of the map that are the home of various species. Among them is the Northern Pike. This type of fish is huge, so big that you’ll have to carry it in the back of your horse, as you do with pelts or animal carcasses.
This fish sells for $4.00 at Trappers in New Hanover and West Elizabeth or $5.00 everywhere else, not a bad way to make some cash. To catch Northern Pikes, you’ll need to head up north when the sky is gray and cloudy and use River Lures.
5 Sisika Island
The Sisika island is a little area that becomes relevant once John is caught by the Pinkertons and send there, making Arthur plan a way to bail him out. While he succeeds with his plan, the area is always guarded and marked in red on the map as a reminder that you shouldn’t go there.
That’s why players don’t think there’s anything of value there; however, this island is the place where you’ll be able to catch the Legendary Bullhead Catfish. You’ll need a rowboat, a river lure, and to head west of the penitentiary.
4 San Luis River
In New Austin, players will find the San Luis River; this place serves as the border between New Austin and Nuevo Paraíso territories, thus separating Mexico from the United States. Fans who have taken up the fishing hobby might want to head up to this location to find Steelhead Trouts.
This type of fish can be caught in all the southern lakes and rivers, but they are more likely to appear in the San Luis River. To fish these guys, you’ll need to use worms as bait; however, you might want to consider using a lure instead because smaller fishes will ignore them.
3 Flat Iron Lake
This lake is the largest one found in the game. To head there, just go to the bottom center of the map, in the space between West Elizabeth, New Hanover, and Lemoyne territories. Keep in mind that if you try to go here and you still haven’t unlocked the Blackwater and New Austin regions, your boat will randomly sink if you try to cross the river.
This area is such a good one for fishing because it has lots of different fish species living in the lake. In Flat Iron Lake, players can catch Largemouth Basses, Smallmouth Basses, Steelhead Trouts, and Lake Sturgeons. Lastly, this area is where you’ll have a chance to fish the Legendary Bluegill, so give this lake a try!
2 Dakota River
The Dakota River is a big river the crosses Ambarino, the Big Valley region of West Elizabeth, the Cumberland Forest, and The Heartlands region of New Hanover. As you can expect, this body of water has lots of fishes ready to be caught.
However, you’ll want to head to the part of the river that’s south of the Wallace Station. This spot is a good one to catch Rock Bass and other basic fishes. As a plus, the area is near Valentine and Strawberry, making it easier to make some profit.
1 Lake Owenjila
Players can find this body of water in the Big Valley region of the West Elizabeth territory. To get there, you’ll have to go to the southwest corner of Big Valley, south of the Black Bone Forest.
Once there, travel a little more to the southeastern till you reach the Owanjila Dam. Is the dam area what you are looking for since it’s a great spot to catch Muskies. This large boy prefers cold and clean waters and can be caught using a lake lure. This location is also great because you can get there quickly by fast-traveling to Strawberry.
