Red Dead Redemption 2, the sequel prequel to Red Dead Redemption, released in 2018 to astounding critical reception thanks in large part to its fascinating narrative and voice cast performances. The world and gameplay detail were also world-class and helped present a setting that felt rich and immersive. It felt as if the world was lived in and existing in real-time. The map featured plenty of hidden secrets and easter eggs waiting to be found by observant players. Let’s now take a look at 10 easter eggs you may have missed your first time through Red Dead Redemption 2.
10 Bigfoot Skeleton
If you’ve played any major modern title from Rockstar Games then you should be familiar with bigfoot in some capacity. It always seems to be the subject of fan theories and rumors and was an on-going easter egg hunt in Grand Theft Auto 5. In Red Dead Redemption 2 players can come across what looks to be an actual skeleton of a giant human, seemingly bigfoot. The skeleton can be found by climbing Mount Shann and simply following a path marked by an eagle at the mountain’s peak.
9 Vampire
To come across the vampire of Saint-Denis, you’ll have to follow a specific checklist. It first starts with you finding all five “Mysterious Writing” collectibles throughout the city. Once this is done Arthur will connect the dots and find a specific location in Saint-Denis he should visit. You’ll come across the vampire feasting on the blood of their latest victim. Players can kill the vampire if they like, but those who’ve roped him up and transported him to other locations have found some interesting things that occur as a result of such an effort.
8 Hobbit House
Ever since Peter Jackson released the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films, much of the contents of the franchise have ingrained themselves in pop culture. One of these things is the iconic hobbit homes which are built into the sides of hills and feature circular doors.
A house with this exact design can be found in Red Dead Redemption 2 by players making their way towards Bacchus Station. It’s a rather quaint location and it is unclear if the resident of this house also attends the tiny hobbit-sized church we’re discussing in the following entry.
7 Tiny Church
Some of the easter eggs in the game have no relevance outside of just being creepy. In an area east of Lakay and just north of Saint-Denis, players can find a tiny little abandoned church. It is now covered in moss which means it’s likely been abandoned for some time. The existence of it is unclear, but players have assumed there’s a connection between it and the hobbit house. Maybe this land was once home to smaller stature humans similar to the pygmies. Either way, having a little chapel in the middle of nowhere is quite unnerving.
6 The Jungle Book
If you’ve seen the film The Jungle Book then you’re familiar with the rather large snake that hangs down from the trees and tries to hypnotize Mowgli. Its name is Kaa, and it comes across much more comedically in the animated version, whereas in the live-action remakes the giant anaconda is quite fear-inducing.
If you happen to be exploring the forest bayou near Lemoyne in Red Dead Redemption 2, then chances are you’ll come across a giant snake hanging from a tree, that’s oddly reminiscent of Kaa from the classic Disney film.
5 UFO
Humans have long believed that aliens have already visited Earth to observe humans. What if this happened during the turn of the century when outlaws and the wild west was becoming civilized? In Red Dead Redemption 2, players can come across such an event. After finding a not in a shack north of Emerald Station, discovering a rock circle on Mount Shann’s summit, and returning to the shack at night, players are greeted to a green glow emanating from a flying object in the sky which is a UFO.
4 Outhouse Woman
The Braithwaite Manor is a location players will visit during the game’s narrative and is the center of a family romance feud not too dissimilar to the one found in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. While you’re on the estate do yourself a favor and explore the land behind the house. You can come across an outhouse that’s chained and locked up, with the sound of a woman’s voice coming from inside it. She sounds deranged and slightly off, but it’s unclear if she’s a prisoner, or maybe something a bit more sinister in nature.
3 Hershel’s Farm
At this point, the television and comic phenomenon known as The Walking Dead has reached a point of saturation and staleness, unfortunately. That being said, it has a rather neat easter egg in Red Dead Redemption 2 that features a callback to the television show’s pilot, as well as the second season. Players can come across a farm that looks eerily familiar to the one ran by Hershel in the show. On the locked barn doors, you can find the words “STAY OUT PLAGUE” which is similar to the message Rick sees in the hospital during the show’s pilot.
2 Freaky Beast House
Red Dead Redemption isn’t just filled with references to pop culture, but it also happens to have these hidden in-world mysteries that seem to be a part of a larger narrative. One of these is a shack that can be found near the Van Horn Trading Post.
Players can maneuvers themselves up to the second floor and enter this house of horrors that’s filled with creepy items. The creepiest of all happens to be a pieced together creature that’s part pig, bear, and human. Is it a reference to South Park, or the home of a serial killer?
1 Time Traveler
One of the coolest and most extensive easter eggs in the game revolves around an optional side quest featuring a man named Francis Sinclair. He has Arthur look for carvings that depict a man with a birthmark traveling through time. At the end of the quest, Arthur meets a woman who has given birth to a boy named Francis. This revelation breaks Arthur’s mind as he tries to come to terms with the fact that the man featured in the rock carvings was Francis, a man who traveled back in time, who Arthur then meets near Francis’ birth.
