As the title of the game suggests, Red Dead Redemption 2 is about redemption and salvation. The game takes the player through a tumultuous ride with Arthur Morgan and the notorious Van der Linde outlaw gang.

One of the Van der Linde gang members that never saw a proper redemption is Kieran Duffy. Unlucky for him, he’s always on the wrong side of history, having rolled with the O’Driscoll boys and thus finding himself trapped between the two gangs’ rivalry. These are ten interesting and often overlooked facts about him. Be warned that spoilers do follow.

10 Kieran Duffy Was Irish

‘Duffy’ is an Irish surname, originating from Connacht province on the western side of Ireland. Plenty of remarkable Irishmen share in it, including Charles Duffy, an Irish-Australian poet, Eoin O’Duffy, a high-profile Irish commander, and Mickey Duffy, a notorious outlaw. Although the latter wasn’t precisely Irish and was born with another surname, he changed his name to Duffy in order to fit in with the Irish Mob.

9 His Parents Died of Cholera

During one of the late-night conversations at the gang’s campfire, Kieran told Sean MacGuire that his parents died of cholera when he was very young. Back in the days, especially in the 1800s, the world was hit by at least eight cholera outbreaks, ranging from 1817 to 1923, claiming millions of lives.

Before his death, Kieran’s father wanted to be a farmer in California, but unfortunately, nobody from the family has ever reached the Golden State. It eerily foreshadows the side quest from the first Redemption game where John Marston finds a man named Sam Odessa, whose dream was to move his family to California, yet never made it.

8 At Some Point In His Life, He Joined the Army

Kieran told Sean how he joined the army, but unfortunately, “that didn’t work out well.” Speaking of the soldiery, it’s interesting to note that Bill Williamson was also in the military.

It can be assumed that Kieran obtained the necessary skills to survive in the wilderness and defend himself from his short-lived days in the army.

7 Before Rolling With the O’Driscolls, He Was In an Unnamed Gang

After his military days came to an end, Kieran fell in with some outlaws, only to find himself alone again after they got killed. Everything came crashing down until the O’Driscolls came and gave him an offer he could not refuse.

“They gave me a choice: ride with ’em or die. So, wasn’t much of a choice,” Kieran said. “All I know is folks all seem to die.”

6 Dealing With Horses and Fishing Are Among His Forte

Back in his youth, young Kieran used to work with horses. As mentioned above, he used to work in a stable but got kicked out later after his parents’ death. That’s why you’ll mostly find him cleaning horses or feeding them by the gang’s camp.

Young Kieran also loved to go fishing. He even tried to bond with Arthur by teaching him how to fish and catch the Legendary Bluegill.

5 Kieran & Mary-Beth Were a Thing

Almost every gang member, including Arthur, Sadie, and Sean, loved to berate Kieran because of his association with the O’Driscolls. Even little Jack liked to throw rocks at him while he was busy with the horses.

Mary-Beth was the only one who was kind to Kieran. She offered him a drink when he was still tied into the tree, and even called him “Sweet, nice, but O’Driscoll.” Upon his disappearance, Mary-Beth asked around the gang about Kieran’s whereabouts until he died in the hands of O’Driscolls.

4 He Had a Special Revolver

Despite being initially unarmed, Kieran obtained a special Cattleman Revolver as his sidearm during the “Paying a Social Call” mission. Unlike the traditional Cattleman Revolvers, Kieran’s was framed with iron and has a bone grip. Other gang members, like Hosea, Sadie, Sean, Lenny, Charles, and John also had their own unique revolvers.

3 Upon Kieran’s Death, Bill Williamson Was the One Who Felt The Most Guilt

Above all the gang members, Bill Williamson was the one who bullied Kieran the most. He threatened to cut Kieran’s testicles off several times, made him drink alcoholic drinks, and was overall a big bully. During the mission called “Paying a Social Call,” Bill told Kieran that the only way he’d die is by “losing his balls first,” which eerily foreshadows his tragic passing.

After his death, he and Arthur felt the most guilt. During one of the random encounters, Bill would tell Arthur that he was “almost starting to like that Kieran” and how he saved Arthur’s life.

2 He’s Buried Near the Braithwaite Manor

After Kieran’s death leading to the gunfight between the Van der Linde gang and the O’Driscoll boys, Dutch ordered Swanson to bury Kieran’s body somewhere nearby.

To pay respects for the late gang member, head over the Braithwaite Manor’s east side to find his grave.
