After years of waiting, Rockstar finally released Red Dead Redemption’s prequel back in 2018. Given its predecessor’s success and the name Rockstar built for themselves - with huge titles like Grand Theft Auto- this game was widely anticipated. Red Dead Redemption II broke several records and generated more money in its opening weekend than Avengers: Infinity War in the same amount of time.
The game received huge critical acclaim and, with over 34 million copies shipped, is one of the best-selling video games of 2018. Still, RDR2 received minor criticism due to a few problems with its controls and the pursue of realism over players’ freedom. Some fans took on to Reddit to share their more unpopular opinions about this prequel.
10 RDR2’s Story Isn’t As Good As The First Game
The amount of dedication Rockstar put into this game made it the massive success that it is. The script alone was over 2,000 pages just for the main storyline! When it released, the game had universal acclaim from critics, becoming the highest-rated PS4 and Xbox One game on Metacritic, alongside GTAV.
Its story was so well received, The New York Times called it an example of video games as a work of art. However, a certain Redditor believes RDR2 wasn’t that great compared to its predecessor, RDR. For user u/Qwerty4755 key story elements, don’t make sense, like Dutch’s gang loyalty or the death of major characters seemingly out of nowhere.
9 RDR2 Online Could Be Better
In 2019 Rockstar finally release RDR2 online counterpart, Red Dead Online. The multiplayer had overall positive reviews, and it still manages to pull players in. So much that recently Rockstar decided to launch Red Dead Online as a separate experience from RDR2, which means you can now buy the online version of the game for only $5.
However, as this Reddit user points out, Red Dead Online isn’t as great as his big brother GTAV online, and it misses the charm Arthur gave to the original storyline.
8 Micah tried to save Arthur
Micah is a character that deserves all the hate he gets from the RDR fandom. He is one of the sequel’s antagonist and is the Judas of Dutch’s gang, turning them into the authorities in exchange for some cash.
However, a certain Reddit user seems to disagree and believes Micah was trying to save Arthur all along. This user points out that Micah told Arthur, “You stick with me, and you’ll live,” when the Pinkertons were coming for the gang. In a way, he tried to save RDR2’s protagonist, even if Micah was the one who put him in danger in the first place.
7 Rains Fall Is One Of The Best Characters
Rains Fall is a major character in this game and the Wapiti Indians’ Chief. He is portrayed as a pacifist and wise character, acting almost like a father to Arthur. He has one of the most touching storylines in the game. The US Army killed his wife and son, and still, Rains Fall refuses to use violence against those who harmed him and his people.
However, as this Reddit user points out, Rain Fall doesn’t get the amount of hype he deserves as he is one of the best characters in the game.
6 The Guarma Chapter Was An Awesome Experience
Red Dead Redemption II’s fifth chapter takes you out of the wild west and into a tropical Island east of Cuba, called Guarma. After this chapter is complete, Arthur and his crew return to America, and players can’t reaccess Guarma.
This chapter is very short compared to the others and takes you out of the cowboy immersion, making players feel like it is a filler chapter or one that doesn’t tie to the plot. However, for a certain Redditor, this fifth chapter is an awesome experience. In the same post, another user adds that the Guarma chapter marks the start of Arthur realizing just how paranoid Dutch is.
5 John Isn’t That Great
Before starting RDR2, players already know all too well one of its characters, John. Though he is the protagonist of the first game, in this one, he acts like a supporting character until the end of the game when you get to control him.
John is the most prominent character in the RDR series and a fan favorite. Unless you are this Reddit user who doesn’t like John, they are not the only ones who feel this way as other users add that John is a mess in RDR2 who doesn’t have his priorities together.
4 Sadie Is A Bad Character
When you first start the game, Sadie is just a defenseless widow who the gang rescues and adopts as one of their own. However, as the story unfolds, she gets stronger and is hell-bent on getting revenge for her husband’s murder.
Sadie’s arc of self-improvement and loyalty towards Arthur makes her a character player’s love, much to this Reddit user’s dismissal who thinks Sadie is a bad character. The user points out that Sadie is reluctant to accept Arthur’s help because she doesn’t need help from a man; she’s impatient and reckless and even has an annoying voice.
3 Abigail Isn’t That Great
As John’s on-and-off significant other, Abigail is another character that appears in both RDR and RDR2. Though she no longer is a prostitute, her past is something John has a hard time getting over with, even making him believe that their son, Jack, isn’t his. This dilemma is the core of most of Abigail’s and John’s discussions, as she wants him to care for them, but John isn’t interested in family life.
While at the end of Red Dead Redemption II, John eventually settles down, some players still don’t like her. Abigail is pretentious - for this Reddit user - a slacker and a disinterested parent who should treat John a little better.
2 The Big Areas Of “Wasted” Map Are Good
Red Dead Redemption II’s map is huge, almost four times the map’s size from the original. To get things into perspective, RDR was set in New Austin with a little bit of West Elizabeth and Mexico. However, in RDR2, New Austin is just one of the five regions you can play in.
One of the things that makes this map so big is that places, like cities or towns, are far apart, which means you have to spend a few minutes on your horse to get anywhere. This may seem like a tedious thing to some players unless you’re this Reddit user who approves of this design decision. This “empty” map is good to the user because they like a setting that’s all about the wilderness and getting away from civilization.
1 Cleet And Joe Seem Like Decent Guys
Cleet and Joe are minor characters that are associated with Micah. The latter introduces the player to this pair in the mission “My Last Boy,” when the gang needs people to help in the upcoming robbery. In the last game moments, both Cleet and Joe side with Micah and hunt down Arthur and John.
While most players would consider this pair minor antagonist, a certain Reddit user thinks they’re pretty okay guys. The user points out that neither of them is rude or unpleasant when you talk to them or that it makes more sense for them to side up with Micah - whom they already know - than to go with Arthur.
