Seven years after it went off the air, AMC’s TV drama Breaking Bad continues to have a huge impact on the modern-day popular culture landscape, including video games. At one point the show was referenced in Tom Clancy’s The Division. However a more recent example of its impact can be seen in a Red Dead Redemption 2 character model fashioned after Byran Cranston’s iconic antihero protagonist Walter White.

An image of Red Dead Redemption 2’s main character Arthur Morgan dressed up like White’s science teacher-turned-drug kingpin alter-ego Heisenberg was uploaded to the r/gaming subreddit Saturday by user smirky_doc. Their post titled “The Meth in the West!,” referencing White’s use of methamphetamine manufacturing to gain financial wealth after being diagnosed with cancer, has received over 55,000 upvotes as of this writing.

Rockstar’s game is full of minute details like pupil dilation that bring its immersive wild west setting to life, and people are still exploring that world two years into its life. Character customization options definitely help to play into that immersion, even if players are choosing to immerse themselves in a role like Walter White rather than using Arthur as a self surrogate.

Breaking Bad is also still discussed to this day, having kicked off a spin-off series called Better Call Saul in 2015, and then a follow-up film starring the show’s deuteragonist Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) called El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie released on Netflix in 2019. In its first seven days of release, the movie was streamed to over 25 million households according to Netflix.

In 2017 Sony also began work on a Breaking Bad-themed PlayStation VR experience, and later the show received a mobile game called Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements for iOS and Android devices. However, never before has Heisenberg been unleashed into an active open-world quite as hectic as that of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Though Red Dead Redemption 2 has no option available to start a meth lab, it’s online component has introduced a job path allowing players to specialize in producing moonshine. Add onto that Arthur Morgan’s propensity to apply Lone Ranger-style justice to the lawless west and the character can be a very apt analog for Walter White.
