Those that miss the glory days of the arcade era will be elated with SNK’s latest mini console. Taking a page out of Arcade1Up’s book, the new Neo Geo MVSX Home Arcade is a small scale recreation of the classic cabinets that were popular in Japanese arcades. Coming packed with 50 Neo Geo titles, it’s already looking like the ultimate compilation of retro fighting goodness.
Standing at a little over two feet tall, the cabinet comes packed with a 17 inch 4:3 monitor with a resolution of 1280x1024, two full arcade sticks for multiplayer action, stereo speakers, and a range of filters to simulate scanlines or give you a crisp look. An optional riser can be purchased to boost the cabinet up an additional three feet, making it stand at a similar height to a full cabinet.
As for the game selection, each of the 50 included titles can be played in either its MVS or AES mode. There are way too many games to list here, but you’ll find the entire King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and Fatal Fury series represented. A range of other non-fighting games included, but SNK is primarily known for its direct competition with Capcom. It makes sense that this cabinet is dedicated to the games most people have heard of.
The price is the only point that might be contentious. The standard model goes for $450 USD while the optional riser will set you back $100. A $500 bundle with both options will knock off $50, but that’s still a lot of coin for what is basically an SNK compilation.
There’s a certain charm to owning an arcade cabinet and this does seem to be SNK’s best offering into the mini-console market yet. The original Neo Geo Mini had a lot of attention paid to aesthetics but failed to offer decent emulation. The follow-up Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro was better still, so there’s a good chance this cabinet will be excellent.
If all of this sounds good to you, you can head over to the official website to get more information. The cabinet has a slated release for October 2020, so it won’t be long before it’s out in the wild.
